Any sufficiently advanced technology is equivalent to magic.
–Sir Arthur C. Clarke
When the first computers were unleashed on the world, the World was stunned. Fast-forward a few decades and the PC’s become ubiquitous. But, with the advent of the internet, gone are the times when I had to leaf through a bulky manual or an encyclopedia to get the information I needed to complete my assignment or to finish my work. But for this information to be readily available, a device aimed at mobility was needed. The laptop was introduced and it has rapidly replaced the PC’s in the average consumer’s home. Although, the laptops are better than their predecessors, they are still prone to give people a pain in the back.
“Necessity is the mother of invention.” Truer words have never been spoken. Enter the tablets. You can not only carry it along with you, but their small size and low weight allows you to carry them in your packet. In my never-ending quest to find the perfect device I have bought countless gadgets. At the time of writing, I own a laptop as well as a tablet. These technological tools have become a necessary evil in my life. Irrespective of whether I am travelling or I am at home, they are never more than an arm’s length away. I can’t do away with either one of them. Why, you ask? Let’s take a small quiz and see which device can be used for which purpose.
Welcome to this special edition of Device vs Device – Is 1 Device enough? In this corner we have the challenger a relatively young 8 inch tablet and in that corner we have the current champion the 15 inch laptop. Who will take home the title of being the ubiquitous consumer device in the average urban household – Only time will tell.
Round 1 – Space and Weight
In terms of space and weight, the tablet is the clear winner of this round. I like how it easy to hold and easy on the hands too. The laptop in spite of its name is tedious to keep on your lap for a long time.
Round 2 – Writing and Presentations
For me, the perfect device needs to be user-friendly for writing blogs as well as for all my other work which involves a fair amount of programming. The laptop takes this round because of the addition of the keyboard which makes writing a breeze.
Round 3 – Reading
Anyone who knows me knows that I love reading. But, I don’t always like carrying a big book while travelling. Since, its smaller, The tablet has already replaced most of my books and I don’t see the laptop being able to be comfortable for reading either.
Round 4 – Entertainment
The laptop fights back. The larger display makes for a better viewing experience when watching movies.
Round 5 – Taking Pictures on the go
If you have been following my blog, you would have realized that I love taking pictures. Since, I don’t always have my camera on me, the tablet comes to the rescue. Another round to the tablet.
Round 6 – Performance
The laptop is the clear winner with better processor speeds, higher ram and storage.
Round 7 – Connectivity
Both devices give access to the facility of voice and video calling as well as social media networks to minimize the distances between me and my loved ones.
Round 8 – Gaming
For the serious gamer like me, the laptop takes this round. But, when I want to kickback with a no-brainer casual game, a tablet is definitely better.
I guess I need both devices to keep the technology addict in me satisfied. Do I hear you going “Oh No! Will I have to keep 2 devices to feed my addiction”. But, never fear, the solution is here. ASUS has seen the plight of the people and has delivered a solution in the form of the ASUS T100 a.k.a. The Transformer Book.
